Kingsdon C of E Primary School
Newsletter – April 2008
Dear Parents
Firstly, I would like to confirm the dates for the
consultation period regarding the future of our school. This will run from
Friday 18th April until Friday 6th June. You will each receive an explanatory
letter and details of how you can express your views about the future provision
of education for the children of Kingsdon. One way will be to complete and
return the questionnaire that County will send you. This is due to be posted
out on April 18t. It is very important that every family responds
to this, so that we can show a totally unanimous front. Even if this is your
child’s last year, a letter in support of their education here would be
extremely helpful.
There will be a public meeting held on Wednesday 21st
May at 7pm here at the school and I would ask that as many of you as
possible attend and please encourage as many members of the local community to
join us as this is their village school too.
There will also be a ‘drop-in’ session on Tuesday 3rd June
from 3.40pm to 5.40pm; this will also be here at the school.
Several parents have asked what ‘Federation’ means; it is
where two or more schools come together under a single governing body with one
or more headteachers. The schools remain on their own sites and on a day to day
basis you will notice little difference. The schools will at times join
together for trips, theatre visits and sports matches and perhaps work together
on joint curriculum projects. These are all things that we currently do within
our Community Learning Partnership.
Over the next few weeks you will be receiving
correspondence from the school and Governors and from County Hall, which will
keep you abreast of the current situation at any one time.
After a very strange Easter break, we are now preparing
ourselves for what I can only assume to be our ‘Spring Holiday.’ However, we
are pleased to welcome Abby Birkin back to school after her illness.
Jody Allen
Jody would like to say a ‘big’ thank you to you all for her gift tokens for baby
’Amelia.’
Our school has certainly been living up to its healthy
school status with children taking part in a wide variety of sports.
Dance
The children have had some very enjoyable dance sessions from Take Art; there is
just one more to come at the end of May to replace a session postponed because
of illness.
Cross Country
Ros Arathoon was selected to run at the Community Learning Partnership (CLP)
Area Cross Country which was a great achievement and she performed extremely
well.
Racquet Festival.
Some children from Years 3 & 4 attended a racquet festival
with children from other schools in the CLP and had an enjoyable afternoon
developing their skills.
Fun Run
Several infants attended the ‘Fun Run’ at Huish;
congratulations to Sophie Overd who won her heat.
Somerset Music Spectacular
Congratulations to all the children in the junior class,
who performed songs from ‘Oliver’ at the Music Spectacular. They really were
superb and despite it being a very long day their behaviour was exemplary. My
thanks to Miss Hallett, who trained them and choreographed their dance routine.
A special mention goes to Polly
Johnson, who took part in the rainforest percussion for
Somerset Music.
Lunchtime Sports
Lunchtime sports club will be starting again after the
Spring break, thanks to the PTFA who will be funding it. This has been a hugely
popular addition to the curriculum.
Science Day
Our year 6 joined the seniors at Huish for a science day;
this was a great opportunity to work with older pupils and get an early taste of
life in secondary school.
Mandarin Lesson
I have arranged for a visiting Chinese teacher from Huish
to come in and give the juniors a ‘taster’ session of Mandarin – my thoughts are
‘they may find this slightly harder than French!’
After School Clubs
Mr Stride has kindly offered to run half a term of football and half a term of
cricket on a Friday, so pencil it in your diaries now!
SATs
A reminder that SATs/assessment week begins for all children (except Reception)
in the week commencing 12th May and no holidays will be authorised that week.
We try to keep the week as normal as possible, so the children are not worried –
they are used to assessments taking place throughout the year. We would ask
that the older children are encouraged to eat breakfast before coming to school,
particularly year 6.
